What To Expect?

During your initial consultation, your acupuncturist will spend the first half hour of the treatment discussing and reviewing your health history, orthopedic assessment, chief complaint(s) and any other factors that impact your health. In addition, your acupuncturist will take pulses from six positions on your wrists and palpate your abdomen as part of their diagnosis. Using the information gathered your acupuncturist will come up with a specific, customized and comprehensive treatment plan that addresses your needs and your body systems as a whole is designed for your comfort level.

What does it feel like to receive acupuncture?

Most patients report feeling a sensation of warmth, tingling or pressure during the insertion of the needle with minimal or no pain. Some people are energized by the treatment, while others feel relaxed. Each person has a unique experience and as heightened awareness of your body and energy increases you may begin to notice more subtle changes both during and after treatments.

What is a "Follow up acupuncture appointment"?

A 60-minute follow up appointment is the continuation of treatment.

Most people need several follow up appointments to alleviate any symptoms they are having, as the beneficial effects of acupuncture are cumulative. Frequency of treatments can range from bi-weekly, weekly, monthly, seasonally as needed and recommended by your acupuncturist.

Is Acupuncture Covered by Insurance?

Some insurance plans are starting to offer coverage for acupuncture. Please check with your provider. While we cannot submit to insurance companies at the present moment, we are happy to provide whatever documentation you need in order to obtain reimbursement yourself. Additionally, Acupuncture is often covered through Flexible Spending Accounts. Please check with your employer.

Adjunctive Therapies additional treatment~Cupping, Guasha, Moxibustion

Cupping & Gua Sha: The use of suction cups and gua sha in Chinese Medicine can range from the treatment of respiratory and digestive disorders to loosening facial restrictions in the treatment of muscular skeletal pain. Cupping was used on Olympic Athletes, before / after swimming events to reduce musculoskeletal shoulder pain and to promote the circulation of lymph, qi and blood.

Moxi is used in a process called Moxibustion.

Moxibustion is a Traditional Chinese Medicine Therapy that uses Moxa, a dry acrid herb called mugwort. It is burned above the skin to promote better circulation of blood and thereby promote your healing process. It can be used also indirectly on top of a needle or in an insulating cream.  Moxa is great for clearing up bruises, reducing and softening scars, relaxes tight cold muscles and abdominal core and can subdue to GI distress.  Moxa has a very warm and tonifying nature and patients enjoy the relaxation and therapeutic effects.
